Ian, The two devices are really quite different with DAC1220 being a delta-sigma based DAC and DAC8831 being a R-2R unbuffered DAC. The biggest difference you have already noted concerning the need of an output amplifier. The other things I would point out is that while the DAC1220 settling time is very low, in general delta-sigma converters do offer an advantage in AC waveform generation on account of R-2R and string DAC topologies suffering from code to code glitch. However, if you have a specific bandwidth of AC waveforms you're interested in generating it is still reasonable to use an R-2R or string based DAC. DAC8831 has support for both an evaluation module and a TINA-TI SPICE model. You can download both from the "Tools & Software" tab of the DAC8831 product folder, also linked here: www.ti.com/.../toolssoftware With the upcoming holidays continued replies may be delayed, thank you for your patience.
